Brand Protection Domain Name Registrations
There seems to be an eternal battle on the internet between those protecting their brands and those who would use those brands in domain names. While some of these brands are easier to protect given that they have trademarks in many countries and jurisdictions, the cost of registering the brand as a domain name in various TLDs can be expensive. But on the other side, domainers are always on the lookout for good generic domains. Sometimes they can get caught in the crossfire.
One of the features of the HosterStats.com domain name history search is that it shows if the domain has history in com/net/org/biz/info/mobi/asia/ie/eu/de/co.uk. If a domain has history in all these TLDs then it is going to either be a valuable generic or a protected brand. There are only 40,169 (as of 01 March 2010) domains that appear in com/net/org/biz/info/mobi/asia/tel TLDs. The cross TLD comparison for .com page shows how domain names are registered across the various TLDs. The April 2010 cross TLD comparisons are currently being processed. An attractive domain name in some of the smaller gTLDs or even a ccTLD may not be so attractive once the domainer is hit with an UDRP action. The cross TLD comparisons are summaries of domain name registration patterns for the various TLDs. The next update of HosterStats.com will include cross TLD comparisons for each individual domain name.
