Brand Protection Registrations in gTLDs – The Numbers

The issue of brand protection registration domain names is an important one for anyone with an business built around a domain name.  Determining what is a brand protection registration is one of the most difficult problems in domain name statistics. The figures below go some way towards solving that problem. They are based on the main gTLDs (.com .net .org .biz .info .mobi .asia). Without actually checking the WHOIS data for each individual domain name and correlating registrant data, it is impossible to have a 100% accurate view. However there is another way – comparing the registrations of the same term in various TLDs and whether the same term is registered in other TLDs and if it is hosted on the same hoster. This means comparing the hosting data for 119,361,431 domain names. While not as accurate as a comparison on domain registrant data, it does provide an insight into how important brand protection registrations are for the volume of domain name registration in a TLD.
