On 01 July 2008, ICANN introduces what is effectively a restocking fee for domains dropped during the Add Grace Period. The fee only affects domains over a specific threshold (10% of new registrations) but the effect on Domain Tasting is apparent. Domain Tasting is no longer a relatively cost free business.

Domain Tasting in 2007 caused massive swings as large numbers of each day's drop were bought up by registries engaged in the practice.

The effects of Domain Tasting begin to obscure the overall growth of the .NET TLD with a sawtooth pattern as more registries begin registering dropped domains and testing them with PPC advertisting. The ones that proved profitable are retained. The non-profitable domains are dropped within the five day Add Grace Period and no fee is payable to ICANN for these dropped domains.

From September 2004, the effects of Domain Tasting begin to affect the .NET growth. The growth pattern shifts from a relatively smooth monthly growth pattern to one that oscillates. From late 2004, domains registered in the .NET TLD are added to the zone immediately.

These figures are based on the zone files for the relevant Top Level Domains. jmcc at hosterstats dot com
